Managing anger has never been an easy thing. As an emotion that seizes us at some of the most inopportune times, it is something that we often cannot control. We feel anger at many different types of events and situations, and it takes an alarming proportion of our mental and emotional energies to counteract its effects. Not only does it rob us of our capacity for rational thought, it robs us of our happiness and our felicity in life. Thus, if we hope to ever have a happy and secure life, we must first learn to deal with anger. In fact, children must be taught from the very beginning how to deal with anger.
Most people use anger management techniques without realizing that they are doing so. Unfortunately, most people use negative anger management techniques, such as hitting their wives or children. You may be surprised to see this classified as an anger management technique, but it is. However, negative anger management techniques are always counterproductive. While it might result in a temporary cessation in a person's anger level, it does nothing for him for in the long-term. This is not to mention the patently undesirable effects in the lives of those who are close to him.
Positive anger management techniques are much more useful than negative ones. There are many positive anger management techniques that anyone can use, and very few of them cost much money. Instead, the best ones are probably those that are available for free. When it comes to children, alternatives such as psychological therapy should be a last resort, not the first choice. Here's a list of much better anger management techniques that children can use:
Play. It is well-known that children can change their emotional states at will, especially in response to changed circumstances. A child can start out angry one minute and be laughing the next. Teach children to redirect their anger and deal with it through play and other activities. Remember: the mind can only really deal with one thought at any given time. If a child is absorbed by what he is doing, then he will most likely fail to sustain his anger.
Physical exercise. While the benefits of physical exercise might be lost on children, it is still one of the habits that must be instilled in them. When a child feels anger or some negative emotion, it might be helpful to instruct them to run or take a walk. The burst of physical exertion and energy will likely dissipate the anger away, in much the same way that exercise helps adults relieve themselves of stress.
Keep in mind that childhood is one of the most important times in a person's life. If you can teach a child how to deal with his anger from an early age, it will most likely stay with him for the rest of his life. And you would have made given him a gift that will give him a steady stream of psychic dividends for years to come.
