What Is Life Like For The Child With Down Syndrome

Many children with Down syndrome live lives that are similar to every other child. They attend school or are home schooled and participate in sports or other extra curricular activities just like any other child. Some Down syndrome children are able to attend regular classes with children who do not have Down syndrome while others need to attend special classes or even special schools to help them in areas where they have more trouble learning.

Children with Down syndrome look different from other children. In fact, their differences are extremely obvious and most people who look at them can tell that they have Down syndrome. For this reason, many of these children are made fun of or are bullied by people at school or in other public places. Kids with Down syndrome have thoughts and feelings just like anyone else. When they get made fun of it hurts their feelings because they also want to be accepted by people and to have friends.

Children with Down syndrome have a tendency to have health problems - some of which are extremely serious. These children spend a lot of time in doctor's offices and have to have many different medical procedures, treatments, and surgeries done before they are even old enough to attend school. Because of these health problems, children with Down syndrome have different activities that they cannot participate in. Because of problems with the hearts, they have to be careful about athletics and exercising. They are also born with loose joints and inadequate muscle tone so strenuous activities or ones that involve heavy equipment are also to be avoided. These health problems also mean that people with Down syndrome have a shorter life span than the general public. While most people live to be between 70 and 80 years old, the person with Down syndrome lives to be only approximately 45-50 years of age.

Many children with Down syndrome grow up to finish school and get jobs. They can work anywhere they are qualified and they work hard. These people are known for their enthusiasm and dedication to their work. Many employers report that they will hire a person with Down syndrome anytime they can because of the hard work and dedication. People with Down syndrome have the desire to be independent and to have families of their own. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Men who have Down syndrome are not physically able to have children of their own. Some people can live in-group homes or assisted living centers but most people with Down's need to have some type of guidance and care throughout the entire lives. Where as children they have an easier time, living lives that are similar to their peers, as they get older it becomes more difficult for them to carry out their own desires, dreams, and goals. Most people have no problem being caregivers for a person with Down syndrome because they have a pleasant disposition and enjoy being around other people. In addition, they are a lot of fun to be around and their love of life tends to be contagious.
