For one thing, the Chinese know that, minimally, people should be able to live to one hundred twenty years old if we take care of ourselves, banish stress, and keep interested in the world around us. The Chinese view male menopause as merely the end of the first sixty-year cycle where the body has achieved peak growth and development. It is now time to make a period of preparation for the next sixty years.

For another thing, the Chinese have recognized a simple set of rules that, if followed faithfully, just might get you to that one hundred twenty year mark. What a party that will be!

The first rule is the hardest but the most good will come of it. Get rid of illnesses as early as possible. There are illnesses attributed to age that are not and should be looked at by the doctor: fatigue, depression, forgetfulness, unsteady on the feet, and even incontinence can be a symptom of a totally different physical problem that needs to be treated right away. Treatment and prescription isn't the end of the matter, either. These problems, such as hypertension, constipation, and difficulty digesting are addressed and cured by lifestyle changes, not managed with medicine. There is certainly room for medicine in severe or genetically related cases, but prevention by getting rid of the root causes of disease is always best!

The second rule is to always maintain mild to moderate sun exposure. Strong direct sun exposure will speed up the aging process. A little sun in the midmorning or late afternoon is more suitable. Experts are beginning to understand that a little exposure to the sun gives us the vitamin D our body needs. Always follow your doc's advice about SPF protection, of course.

The third rule is to avoid smoking and to be moderate in your consumption of alcohol.

There is just no good to come from smoking. It not only is a hazard to our health, but it dries the skin, restricts oxygen to our body, and makes us smell really foul. Alcohol: wine, that is, used in moderation can be salubrious to our health. Too much is not, and not only to our physical health, but our emotional health as well.

The next rule is to eat a healthy diet and drink good water. Fruits, veggies, you know the litany. Good water, though, may take a little more ingenuity. Does the water from the tap taste good to you? Did you have to force yourself to drink the water until you were used to it? Find some spring water that tastes good, and then go about its means of procurement. Bottled water that is brought to your house, or that you pick up yourself, is what you want to use short of washing your hands. Discover just how delicious water is, and savor it. Some lucky people live within driving distance of a spring and don't know it. Check out a map of your state and check out the national parks especially. The rangers will know if the spring is safe to drink and if it is equipped to dispense to the public.

Good healthy food, delicious water, a little wine. Sometimes watching our health can be quite enjoyable!
