In a recent survey of parents who have children with Down syndrome, they reported that when they were notified of their child’s diagnosis they wished their doctor would have focused more on the positive aspects of the disease. Women who were notified as a result of prenatal testing determined that the doctor presented the syndrome as an extremely negative situation to be in and most generally began the conversation with the words, “I’m sorry”. It is important to note that 90% of pregnant women who are given a diagnosis of Down syndrome choose to terminate the pregnancy. This number may be less if the information initially given to the parents included the positive aspects of the syndrome.
