Vegetarianism is a type of lifestyle decision that many people choose to make these days. They may choose to do so for health reasons, for the good of the environment, or to avoid animal cruelty. Some vegetarians choose to be vegan, meaning that they do their best to avoid eating any products that have any types of ingredients that originate from animals, including eggs and dairy products. There are other forms of vegetarianism that are not as commonly found throughout society, and one of these forms is known as fruitarianism. As the name implies, fruitarianists work towards having diets that are completely consistent of fruits of plants and trees. In this article, we'll discuss some of the aspects of fruitarianism so that you can get a better idea of what the lesser-known practice is all about.

The fruitarian diet can really differ depending upon the individual that is undergoing the practice. Some feel that making the majority of their meals, or fifty percent or more of their meals, consistent of fruits. Others feel that the definition of a fruit may include such foods such as nuts, grains, or bell peppers. Some argue that a true fruitarian will only eat fruits that will naturally fall off of the plant, so that they may avoid killing the plant by harvesting the fruit.

As far as motivation for the diet, many of the individuals that follow a fruitarian diet do so due to religious reasons; they may employ a holistic approach to medicine and argue that a fundamentalist lifestyle should be sought after, stating that Adam and Eve ate fruit in order to set a good example. Others simply feel that they want to avoid destroying life as much as possible, treading lightly on the earth and being gentle to both plant and animal life.

The diet is definitely not without its critics; the United States National Institute of Health has stated that a fruitarian is unable to get the proper amount of vitamin B12 in their diet, which can be damaging to their health. Also, the lack of protein that the diet promotes can be problematic in terms of an individual's level of health. If you are considering becoming a fruitarian and are wondering about how the diet can be sustainable while maintaining your level of health, you may want to consider supplementing your diet with protein, vitamin B12, and several other key nutrients that you are unable to obtain via fruit.

Without a doubt, the fruitarian diet can be very difficult to see through. If you agree with the principles of the diet, you may want to consider trying to ease into it by eating more fruit and decreasing your consumption of animal products. In the end, you may find that the slow and steady path towards a fruitarian diet can be ultimately more successful than trying to immediately switch your diet up. Also, be sure to do plenty of research regarding exactly what types of supplementation you will need to do with your diet in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Oftentimes, it is wise to consult some hard numbers when considering whether or not you should take a certain course of action. In this article, we will relay some statistics to you regarding a vegetarian diet's effects on the environment so that you can easily see the benefits that the diet can have for you and the world.

- Raising animals in order to use them for their meats is a very resource-intensive process. Studies have shown that only twenty percent of the corn that is made in the United States is eaten by humans, with the other eighty percent given to animals. Consequently, a full fifty percent of the water in the United States is used to raise livestock. On one single acre of land, twenty thousand pounds of potatoes can be created. Raising cattle on one acre of land, by comparison, would result in only one hundred and sixty five pounds of meat. Consequently, the amount of land that it would take to feed one person exclusively meat would be equivalent to the amount of land it would take to feed twenty vegetarians. It is easy to see how wasteful raising livestock for their meat can be. If mankind were to adopt a more plant-based diet, many problems with world hunger would be solved. Studies have shown that if Americans were to decrease their meat consumption by merely ten percent, sixty million people could be fed by the resulting grain. With a child in the world dying of starvation every two seconds, you can clearly tell how important it can be to maintain a plant-based diet.

- Another thing to consider when considering the implications of raising livestock for their meat is the soil depletion that it can cause. Historically, many nations have fallen due to a depletion of their topsoil, and studies have shown that the United States has already lost approximately seventy five percent of its original topsoil. Every year, four million acres of crop land in the United States is lost due to soil erosion. Consequently, many forests are cleared in order to make room for more crop land, resulting in an acre of trees disappearing in the United States every eight seconds. By switching to a vegetarian diet, an individual conserves roughly one acre of forest per year.

- Global warming is becoming more and more of a concern in our world today. You may be shocked to realize that one of the most significant factors in global warming is the raising of livestock. The carbon dioxide produced by livestock raised for meat contributes to approximately eighteen percent of the global warming effect. Automobiles, by contrast, only account for fifteen percent of humanity's carbon dioxide output.

Clearly, the implications that your diet can have on the world are far-reaching. Not only is being a vegetarian a great move to make for your own health, but it is also a significant measure to take when it comes to saving the environment, a fact that you should definitely consider.

So many people in the American culture live a life on the go. There is so much to do and so much to accomplish. Jobs and gym memberships as well as church involvement and other social activities keep us running. Many people also add children to the equation and then school, sports practices, concerts and more social engagements get thrown into the mix. It's no wonder that it is difficult to get adequate nutrition. Who has time to fix three nutritious meals at home each day? Most convenience snack items are filled with salt, sugar, fat or all three. Vegetarians have an even greater challenge of staying nourished because the fast food that is available rarely offers not meat protein options. When it's time to eat and you're on the go, there are a few things to keep in mind to feed yourself and your family nutritiously.

Easy Vegetarian Snacks

The easiest snacks to take with you are produce items. Fruits and vegetables come conveniently packaged in individual sizes. Apples, bananas, pears and oranges are all nutritious fruits that are self contained and easy to transport. They don't require refrigeration so they are very easy to bring from home. Carrot sticks, zucchini sticks, broccoli florets and sugar snap peas do need to be prepped a little bit more than the fruits and they require extra packaging, but they are still easy to carry. A small bag of carrots as an afternoon snack can be very refreshing. When you need a little bit denser of a snack, try bringing a bag of pretzels or a box of graham crackers. Both are good sources of nutritious carbohydrates and both will be well complimented with a cup of yogurt. Yogurt also carries with it some protein for an energy boost that is approved for vegetarians. When you need more than a snack and the burger joint isn't serving veggie burgers, there are also quick and easy meals that you can take with you.

Vegetarian Meals on the Go

Stacking on crackers is a fun way for kids to get a meal on the road. Pack some individual baggies with cheeses, fruit slices, cucumber and zucchini slices and of course, crackers. Even you will enjoy making different stacking combinations for a quick and crunchy lunch. Sandwiches, while less crunchy, are also a very easy on the road solution for what's for lunch. Pack a few in the morning and they will be ready for lunch. If you get tired of the peanut butter and jelly standby, try adding a little variety to your sandwich making. Mix a few cooked pinto beans and mayo if you like, into your leftover guacamole. The tomatoes and onions add flavor and texture and the whole mixture ends up being a delicious bean salad sandwich. If you do bring foods that require refrigeration, make sure to stick them in an insulated bag with some ice.

Just because you are busy does not mean that you can't eat nutritious and fun vegetarian foods throughout the day. It does take a little bit of preparation ahead of time, but the availability of good food later in the day is worth the effort. If you do not have time to make snacks in the morning, try stopping at a grocery store instead of a drive through.

As many proponents as there are for vegetarianism there are just as many people who don't have an opinion on the subject. On the other extreme however, there are also just as many people who would go so far as to argue against the practice. Just as the reasoning behind vegetarianism is broad and diverse, so is the reasoning against it. People have abstract and concrete answers for adhering to a vegetarian diet. Similarly, there are arguments across the board against the advancement of vegetarian diets. Every person must decide for themselves if a vegetarian diet is a good idea. Following are a few arguments in favor of eating meat.

A Biblical Standing

In Genesis, God told Adam and Eve that the animals were created for them. They were to take dominion over them. Elsewhere in the Bible, humans were told that the animals were created for food. This belief directly contradicts a typical vegetarian viewpoint of the sacredness of animal life. Animals were made to sustain human life, not the other way around. While animals are not to be abused, they are to be used for human benefit. It seems unlikely that the ideal nutritional value in animal meat is coincidental.

A Monetary View

Ranchers and farmers depend on the income that comes from raising and selling animal meat. The American economy is deeply invested in the cattle market. If people in this country continue to migrate to vegetarianism, many people stand to lose valuable income. The nation overall will have to rework its investments. Thankfully, such a drastic shift is very far in the future. For the time being, cattle ranchers and other meat producers are advertising to stimulate the purchase of their products. Vegetarians are arguably advocating the fall of the animal farmer and rancher.

Satisfying Nutrition

Meat is full of valuable nutrients that human bodies need. It is possible to replace the iron and protein lost when meat is eliminated from the diet, but the replacement can be difficult to make complete. Beans and nuts are good sources of protein, but they are not in themselves complete proteins. Animal muscle is made up of exactly what our bodies need to build their own muscles and to repair tissue. Children especially benefit from the consumption of meat. While meat often is high in fat, much of the fat is visible and so can be removed easily. Red meat has been associated with many health risks, but in moderation and in combination with other meat sources, it is a good addition to a balanced diet. Meats and other animal products are an easy source for essential nutrition.

There are some valid reasons for which to abandon or reduce the consumption of meat. In large amounts, meat can be hazardous to the cardiovascular system. On the other hand, there is rarely a strong need for a person to stop eating meat. By continuing to consume meat, a person can ensure a proper balance of complete protein for the ideal functioning of his body. Before switching to a vegetarian lifestyle, investigate the value that meat contains for your body.

It's no secret that the vegetarian diet can be a much more healthy option than a meat-eating diet. In America, heart disease is the number one killer, and many of the deaths could have been prevented if an individual would have taken on a vegetarian diet when their health began to decline. Studies have shown that there are many different types of vegetable foods that can help the body to defend against several afflictions, including cancer and heart disease. In this article, we'll be reviewing what these foods are and explaining how they can help you to maintain a good level of health when eaten regularly.

Soy, one of the main staples of many vegetarians' diets, is one of the best foods that the body could ask for. Soybeans contain essential amino acids that the body needs as well as an abundant amount of protein that will help the body to build new tissues and repair old ones. Many soy products are also fortified with calcium, another nutrient that many vegetarians don't get enough of. As a matter of fact, many B vitamins, zinc, and iron are also found in soy products, making them an ideal replacement for meat in the vegetarian diet. Studies have shown that soy is helpful when it comes to lowering LDL cholesterol levels, which can help to decrease the clogging of arteries that causes the deaths of the majority of people in meat-eating societies.

Collard greens are another food that you may want to consider adding to your diet. They contain high levels of calcium which make them ideal when you are trying to stop eating dairy products. Whereas dairy products offer calcium while containing saturated fat, cholesterol, and hormones, collard greens offer a pure plant-based calcium that is easily absorbed by the body.

Garlic is another important food that can be great for your health. It has anti-biotic properties which are helpful when it comes to helping your body to defend itself against parasites and bacteria. It is also known to be helpful for regulating the cholesterol level of the human body, as well as blood pressure. Considering the fact that it contains a high level of vitamins A and C, which are antioxidants that help the body to defend itself against free-radical particles, garlic is a wonderful additive ingredient to your vegetarian dishes that can help your body to protect itself from invaders.

Wheatgrass juice is a type of food that has numerous benefits for the body as well. A small amount of wheatgrass, even one ounce will easily fulfill your daily requirements of calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and potassium. There is also plenty of protein in wheatgrass juice, a nutrient that is often required by vegetarians since it is often received from eating meat. Wheatgrass juice also is helpful in keeping the immune system strong and working towards eliminating tumors that may be present.

Clearly, there are plenty of vegetarian foods that can be very helpful to add to your diet. The vegetarian lifestyle in general is much more healthy than an omnivorous diet, and it's easy to see why.

There are many different sub-groups of people that feel that vegetarianism is the proper path for man to follow. There are several different beliefs prominent in the world of vegetarianism, and many people choose to undertake a vegan lifestyle in order to reap numerous health benefits while helping to fight animal cruelty. In this article, we'll work towards giving you a better idea of what exactly veganism is, showing how it is different from standard vegetarianism and giving you some insight as to why people make the decision to go vegan.

All vegetarians make the decision that eating the meat of animals is a poor idea in terms of health and animal cruelty. The difference between a normal vegetarian and a vegan lies in the fact that vegetarians still allow themselves to eat foods that are made by animals, while vegans do not. That means that vegans avoid foods such as eggs, milk, or fish. People may choose to go vegan for several different reasons, and many make the decision because they feel that cruelty goes into creating any animal product. Others choose to opt for the vegan diet for health reasons, as numerous studies have shown that the vegan diet can have positive effects on an individual's health. With heart disease being the number one cause of death in the United States as well as many other industrialized countries, becoming a vegan can really be a positive step to take for your personal health. Still others choose to become vegan in order to help to decrease the amount of impact that they have on the planet. These vegans stress that the trophic levels of the food chain state that less and less energy is passed on when animals eat plants and humans eat the animals. Also, an individual's carbon dioxide footprint can be greatly decreased by deciding to become a vegan, which many people find beneficial as it may help to decrease problems with global warming.

Those who choose to become vegan often need to make several changes to their diet in order to accommodate for their nutritional levels. Most vegans focus on diets that are based around foods such as tofu which can help to provide the protein that their bodies need in place of the protein that would be provided through eating animal meat. In addition to ensuring that they receive the proper amount of protein, vegans also need to make sure that they get enough vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, and iodine, as many suffer from decreased levels of these nutrients when abandoning a diet that contains meat products. A lack of these key vitamins and minerals can lead to several different debilitating health problems, including, but not limited to anemia, rickets, or hyperthyroidism. Luckily, supplementation can easily take the place of animal products when it comes to maintaining a diet rich in these nutrients.

Adopting the vegan lifestyle can be a difficult task, but the benefits that it offers to your health and the environment can be well worth your efforts. Learn all that you can about the vegan diet before making the change so that you will know some of the obstacles that you will need to overcome when removing animal products from your diet.

The vegetarian diet can be tough to adapt to, but the numerous positive effects the diet has on your body and the environment can be well worth your efforts. In this article, we'll attempt to fill you in on a little information regarding vegetarianism that you may not be familiar with in order to increase your knowledge of how the diet can be beneficial.

Vegetarians need to be particularly careful with their diet in order to ensure that they are getting all of the iron that they need. Iron is an important mineral that is often found in meat, and so in order to meet their body's needs, vegetarians can eat dried beans, green leafy vegetables and dried fruits. Female vegetarians in particular need to regulate their levels of iron because much of the body's iron supply is depleted during menstruation. If iron intake is not as high as it should be, you could be at risk for an iron deficiency or anemia. If you're unsure on how much iron you should be getting in order to be in good health, you should speak to a dietitian who can help you to identify exactly how much you need.

- While most vegetarians do their best to avoid eating any meat or animal products whatsoever, it is important to note that even simply reducing the quantity of meat and dairy products that you eat can be a significant towards keeping better health. Vegetarians have been shown to be at a lower risk for developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity, clearly illustrating how superior the diet can be for one's health, and decreasing meat consumption can offer similar effects albeit to a lesser degree.

- Many vegetarians think that just by not eating meat, they can maintain proper health. However, it is important to realize that there is plenty of fat that can enter your diet through processed or fried foods. Also, nuts are very high in both protein and fat, so one is encouraged to watch their intakes in order to ensure that they take in only a small amount of fat.

- Of all of the vitamins that are deemed important to the body by nutritionists, only one vitamin can not be found in a vegetarian diet – vitamin B12. Luckily, individuals who are worried about their bodies getting all of the nutrition that they need can take supplements in order to fulfill their daily requirement of B12. Other vitamins can be found in fruits, vegetables, and grains in abundance.

- A vegetarian cookbook can be one of the most important things you can have that will help you to stick to your diet. Be sure to stock your house with vegetarian staples such as canned beans, granola, nuts, and fresh fruits and vegetables so that you will always have something to snack on if you're getting hungry and feeling tempted. You may even want to get a 'car kit' together full of vegetarian snacks so that you can ensure you'll have something to eat if you end up stuck somewhere where you cannot find any vegetarian foods.

Without a doubt, one of the hardest parts of being a vegetarian is having something to eat when you have to dine out. Many restaurants have menus that are based upon meat-eating diets so you really have to watch your step when it comes to going out to eat. In this article, we'll offer up some tips on how you can stick to your vegetarian diet when you are placed in situations where you are not able to dine the way that you would want to.

- One situation that can be difficult to navigate is going to a barbecue. It's a traditional American pastime, and it is one that is firmly based in meat-eating culture. In order to get through a barbecue, you may want to consider bringing a meat-substitute to grill. Boca burgers or tofu dogs are two options that you may want to think about. Bring a little extra in case someone wants to give it a shot, and who knows? You might be able to help someone to develop a more vegetarian diet.

- When you have to eat at a banquet and there are no vegetarian dining options, you may want to consider asking your server if they might be able to ask the cooks if they could assemble a basic and easy vegetarian dish. Think about food items that are commonly found in restaurants and you may be able to get them to create you a dish that you will enjoy. Baked potatoes and steamed vegetables are two types of foods that are commonly in the kitchens of banquet halls, so you might want to try to base a dish off of them. Pasta is another common option that you may want to ask about.

- If you have an option on where to go out to eat, you may want to consider opting for a type of ethnic cuisine. Typical American fare tends to be more focused on meats than the diets of other cultures, so you may want to consider trying Thai food or Indian food in order to ensure that your vegetarian needs will be easily met by the restaurant staff with a minimum of difficulty.

- More and more, restaurants are beginning to offer vegetarian-friendly options. These days, even fast food restaurants are beginning to offer meat-substitute foods such as Boca burgers, making it quite easy for a vegetarian to dine in compliance with their diets while on the go.

Without a doubt, it is much easier to maintain a diet that contains meat than it is to stick to a vegetarian diet. It can be difficult to stick with, but the results that it can have on your health and the impact that it can have on the environment make becoming a vegetarian one of the best decisions that you could make. More than ever, life is getting easier for a vegetarian to maintain, but it still requires some dedication and hard work on your part. Stick with it!

Imagine yourself on a road trip. You stay in motels and see the sights as you go. Your destination doesn't seem very far away because the trip in itself is a worthwhile adventure. Now imagine what you're going to eat on the way. Fast food brings a little disappointment to your fantasy. The grease makes your stomach heavy and a little sick when you get back into the car. Maybe you'll find a nicer sit down restaurant, but depending where you are, local places can be a gamble. Now, add one more piece to the vacation equation. You are a vegetarian. Does it seem impossible to eat well on the road? It's not impossible, but it can add even a little more adventure to your regularly scheduled events. Here are a few guidelines to follow when planning your next road trip. Happy trails and eat well!

Search Out the Vegetarian Restaurants

This may seem like an easy step to follow. You may even be wondering why anyone should have to tell you to do such a thing. Vegetarians will naturally look for vegetarian restaurants, right? That may be true, but finding them is not as easy as it sounds. A good place to start is online before you go. Search the yellow pages for any vegetarian restaurants along the way. This will save you some time and frustration when you get to a town that does not offer such an eatery. Order carefully when you do get to a place that hosts a vegetarian restaurant. As with most eating establishments, the menu will be full of salty greasy options heavily weighted in the direction of protein. Read the descriptions carefully for additions of sauces and cheeses as well as for the word 'fried.' You will save yourself some discomfort on the road if you choose fresh menu items with balanced ingredients.

Pack a Cooler

Because not every place will have a vegetarian restaurant and because not every restaurant will offer vegetarian entrees, you will be wise to bring some food with you. Splurge a little on the good stuff because you can bet that it will be cheaper than any dining out meal anyway. Look for non perishable foods and sandwich fixings. It will be more refreshing than you can predict to be able to pull over and fix yourself a sandwich with fresh tomatoes, avocados and a few onions with your favorite cheese. Coming out of a restaurant where you were not totally successful at finding a well balanced meal on the menu, you'll be able to pop open your cooler to find a piece of fresh fruit and a few carrot sticks.

The key to eating a well balanced vegetarian diet on the road is to be prepared to be flexible. Know where you can expect to find your favorite restaurants. Be ready with your own 'cooking' when those restaurants aren't available. Finally, don't be disappointed if you have to look around for a restaurant that offers some appealing vegetarian entrée. It will happen that your cooler will be empty and your restaurants will be closed. Take it all in as part of the grand adventure.

Many people understand the many benefits that a vegetarian diet can have tfor your health and the environment, but few realize exactly how many different subsets of vegetarianism there are. When it comes to vegetarianism, many people choose to be either a lacto-vegetarian or an ovo-vegetarian. In this article, we will attempt to explain some of the differences between these two diets so that it will be easier for you to figure out exactly which type of diet you should take on for yourself.

Lacto-vegetarians are people that believe that they should avoid eating eggs, but allow themselves to have dairy products. Lacto-vegetarians contend that they should be allowed to have dairy products since they do not lead to the death of cows, but avoid eating eggs because they are potentially destroying a life in eating them. Dairy products contain lactose as a principle ingredient, giving this type of vegetarian diet its name. If you have problems with your cholesterol levels, you may want to consider the lacto-vegetarian diet as it can help you to decrease your levels by removing meat and eggs from your diet.

Ovo-vegetarians comprise most of the other vegetarians in the world today, and they have a radically different belief structure from lacto-vegetarians. Ovo-vegetarians allow themselves to eat eggs, stating that the eggs that are made for human consumption are not fertilized and therefore do not cause any animal death. Ovo-vegetarians stress that they should avoid eating dairy products, unlike their lacto-vegetarian counterparts, because they feel that milk is produced only after a mother cow has given birth to a calf which will probably be used for its meat. To that end, ovo-vegetarians and lacto-vegetarians follow very different belief structures and they often argue about which course of action is the right one to take.

Vegans, by contrast, are vegetarians that feel that they should avoid any type of animal product, ensuring that all of the things that they eat only contain ingredients that come from fruits, grains, and vegetables. This is a hard lifestyle to maintain, but many people find comfort in this diet once they are able to adjust.

Finally, there is a separate group of vegetarians that refer to themselves as lacto-ovo vegetarians. These individuals allow themselves to eat all of the things that the ovo and lacto-vegetarians avoid, allowing for the consumption of both dairy products and eggs. This type of vegetarian is the most commonly found type within the United States, as individuals merely refrain from eating types of meat in order to keep their diet the way that they want to.

Whatever you decide, rest assured that you are making a good decision when it comes to cutting meat out of your diet. Regardless of your individual beliefs over issues of lacto-vegetarianism or ovo-vegetarianism, by cutting meat out of your diet you are helping to promote the proper treatment of animals and will likely find numerous benefits for your health in your new diet. Stay committed, and it will be well worth it!
