The occasional bout with constipation – also known as fecal impaction – may be treated with a glass of prune juice or a few fiber crackers. Before long, the intestines will be cleared and the sufferer will once again enjoy regularity of bowel movements. With proper dietary modification, the odds are good that the bouts of constipation will be few and far between and more often than not should not reoccur.

Yet there are times when treating fecal impaction as a digestive system disorder is required and more extensive measures need to be taken not only to evacuate feces from the gastrointestinal tract, but also to help the digestive system to expel the waste from the anus without consistent presence of external aides. To this end, a physician may make the following treatment choices:

* The physician will refer to the patient to a dietician for a consultation and revamping of the daily food and liquids intake. By and large dietary fiber must be increased and in addition to dietary supplements, the dietician will most likely suggest that the patient add two more servings of whole vegetables or fruits to the daily meal plan, while also forbidding all breads except those made from whole wheat. In some cases, flax oil is added to the diet. In addition to the foregoing, a small glass of prune juice might need to be enjoyed with each meal.

* Severe fecal impaction is treated with enemas using oils or glycerin. Granted, many of these enemas may be purchased over the counter and used at home, but for children suffering from the most serious fecal impaction it is wise to have a professional take care of the problem to ensure that the more tender intestinal mucosa of the child's intestines is not harmed by either the device used to introduce the liquid or by the liquid itself.

* Self medicating with laxatives is a double edged sword and the medical community is divided on their uses. Proponents point to the quick work these laxatives do and thus the overall relief the patient will enjoy within just a few minutes or short hours, while opponents point out that studies suggest the use of laxative to be causal in the development of intestinal dependency on such aides to void feces in the future.

* Those subscribing to alternative forms of medicine might participate in a form of colonic irrigation which is another hot button topic in the medical community.

* After the immediate discomfort has been removed and the diet has been modified to such an extent that severe fecal impaction is reasonably considered to be unlikely in the future, any subsequent bouts with the problem may give rise to concern about other digestive system disorders and thus may suggest the need for further testing. In this case a doctor may prescribe a colonoscopy and other semi-invasive tests to ensure the health of the overall gastrointestinal tract. Patients will be wise to follow up on their doctor's suggestions and participate in treating fecal impaction as a digestive system disorder that requires further attention.

With the sudden popularity of whole foods establishments and also health food restaurants, it is not surprising that unscrupulous marketers have taken to the Internet at unprecedented rates. With them come questionable cures, sometimes dangerous dietary supplements, and a whole array of health and beauty treatments that seem to be firmly rooted in quackery and most likely also just as effective. While it would be simplistic to simply ignore such products and their sellers, the fact that digestive system disorders brought on by boutique treatments and dangerous substances is on the rise should not be ignored but instead serve as a warning to the consumer considering such steps.

In general nobody will leave their house in the morning with the defined goal of doing something that is harmful to their health. In the same vein, rarely will anyone peruse the Internet or health food store for products that will have an adverse effect on their digestive system. Instead, most anyone will be in search for something that will help them to lose weight, have more energy, increase their vitality, look younger, and do it all as naturally as possible.

Focusing on the colon and digestive tract has become a common step in today's dieting and overall health movement and with the sudden mushrooming of colon cleanses that have appeared on the market, they are sometimes seen as a panacea that will undo years of damage – and even ongoing damage – of unhealthy eating habits. Yet in some cases the appearance of self proclaimed medical specialists who are specializing in the alternative healing arts have opened storefronts and among other disciplines they also offer colon hydrotherapy.

The latter is an odd practice that seeks to void the colon of all waste by using water that has been heated to about body temperature. It has been suggested that this is a more effective colon cleanse since the warm water will soften hardened stools and thus permit for more waste material to be flushed out almost immediately rather than through the use of herbal supplements or even an enema. To proceed properly, the healer will suggest a number of sessions that must be specifically spaced for maximum effect and in some cases it is suggested that other components are added to the water to provide a somewhat sterilizing effect on the colon in an effort to decrease any harmful bacteria colonies which may have set up housekeeping.

Yet therein is the rub: bacteria are absolutely vital to the proper functioning of the digestive tract and while harmful bacteria area associated with illnesses and even mortality, the reduction in useful bacteria is part and parcel of digestive system disorders brought on by boutique treatments such as a colon hydrotherapy set of sessions. It is therefore not surprising that many opponents have taken to educate the public by pointing out the danger of the treatments and also pointing to the exorbitant costs of the various sessions, suggesting that they are little more than feel good treatments that will actually have the very opposite effect on the body's overall health and the gastrointestinal tract's proper working in particular.

The anus is the final component of the digestive system's lower gastrointestinal tract. Offering an opening for the feces to be voided from the body's rectum, it is surrounded by strong muscles that prevent an involuntary discharge of waste. Even though defecation is the activity most commonly associated with the anus, it is rarely thought of as belonging to the lower GI tract and thus being an entity onto itself.

As a matter of fact, there a plethora of digestive system disorders of the anus that may range from the benign to the life threatening:

1. Sometimes secondary to other gastrointestinal problems are anal fissure which are most commonly associated with constipation as well as diarrhea. Hard stools in particular tend to damage the mucosa of the anus to the point of cracking and the result is bloody discharge from the fissures. If the incidents of this nature are only occasional or temporary, the fissures will heal, yet if diarrhea or constipation are chronic, then the consistent aggravation of the anal mucosa will lead to chronic anal fissures, a digestive system disorder of the anus, that should be treated with warm baths and treatment of the primary GI problem that is affecting the health of the anus.

2. Anal cancer is not synonymous with colorectal cancer, as is mistakenly believed in the common wisdom, and it is directly related to infection with the human papillomavirus. Surgery is supposed to be effective although the long term need for colostomies are making life after cancer treatment somewhat challenging.

3. Fecal incontinence is a symptom of a plethora of ailments, some of which point to fecal impaction or muscle as well as nerve damage within the lower gastrointestinal tract, while other causes point to a failure of the intestines to properly absorb nutrients and dietary components. By and large the reason for the fecal incontinence is usually sought to be treated with dietary modification.

4. As a birth defect, some infants are diagnosed with an imperforate anus that showcases an incompletely opened anal aperture which requires surgery and also necessitates further investigation of possible further digestive system disorders that may go further than just the anus.

5. Hemorrhoids are of course the most widely known anal disorder and plenty of over the counter treatments are available. At issue is undue pressure placed on the veins of the anal walls which may be avoided but once incurred is hard to get rid of.

Of course, some disorders are brought on by questionable practices such as piercing of the anal region or even the removal or bleaching of the public hair surrounding the rectum's opening. This results in a potentially chronic inflammation of the tissues and thus should be avoided. Another reason why the anus may become subject of serious digestive system disorders is directly related to anal eroticism which has led to the development and practice of risky sexual practices. As such sex play is directly associated with anal fissures, it is wise to be circumspect in engaging in such activity.

It is a sensible notion that suggests any system as long and also involved in a plethora of activities as the digestive one may become affected by a number of digestive system disorders compounding to such an extent as to cause other some such disorders within their very own system. Simplicity requires that each and every gastrointestinal component is examined by itself and judged on its own appearance and exposure to illness causing agents, but failure to appreciate the interconnectivity of the digestive tract will potentially not only lead to a false diagnosis, but even worse suggest to consumers that self-medicating with the plethora of available over the counter pills, shakes, and tinctures is safe!

The latter, of course, is anything but safe and while laxatives may present a temporary form of relief to a common problem it negates the intricate workings of the gastrointestinal tract and the interdependence each segment has on the previous and the one following.

Take for example the case of rectal prolapse. The immediate cause of such a presentation is almost always the ligaments which have become weak to such an extent that the rectum cannot be properly held within the place allotted by nature. At times it is the muscles associated with the sphincter that are blamed for rectal prolapse while in other cases it is considered to be a conjoint process of weakened muscles and ligaments that both act upon the rectum.

Interestingly, rectal prolapse is the perfect example of digestive system disorders compounding and while there are some illnesses that lead to this condition – most commonly cystic fibrosis and COPD – the unfettered occurrence of diarrhea and constipation over long periods of time are also to blame. While the latter two are digestive system disorders brought on by a plethora of possible reasons, they also are to be dealt with as soon as they occur to prevent further damage to the gastrointestinal system, but when this is avoided in favor the quick fix found in the stores' pharmaceutical aisle, the compounding of the disorders has serious results.

As the frequent diarrhea, constipation and associated straining during bowel movement contributes to a loosening and weakening of the muscles, the ability of these same muscles to keep the rectum in place is also compromised. As the rectal prolapse increases in severity, the only option is generally surgery that may be perineal or abdominal. Adding to the danger of any surgery involved is the fact that this is a condition that appears most commonly in the population of elderly patients and although many will not report it to their physicians for reasons of modesty, those that do have to consider carefully if the risk of generally anesthesia is truly feasible. Some have suggested that rectal prolapse may be avoided with a simple diet modification that will provide natural relief for diarrhea and constipation and thus set the patient onto a healthy lifestyle course that will most likely prevent the repetitive bouts of these digestive system disorders.

Who has not seen the warning sign on a pack of steaks that warns to cook the meat until its inner temperature reaches a certain level? Those with proper bifocals will undoubtedly have noticed the notations on restaurant menus that offer to cook your burgers as raw as you like while the fine print suggests that certain food choices may result in the potential for food borne illness, which the restaurant suggests you avoid.

Digestive system disorders brought on by food borne illnesses are always fraught by discomfort and in many case cause the sufferer to despair whether to vomit first or relieve the severe diarrhea that has been plaguing her or him. Yet in some cases the food borne illnesses that might be contracted are by far more serious and may have much further reaching results and effects on the digestive system as a whole and even some of the accessory organs, such as the liver in particular.

Keep in mind that food borne illness and food poisoning are colloquially used interchangeably, yet this is a distinct misnomer in that the latter assumes the presence of a defined poison – natural or otherwise – while the former is the umbrella under which rest a plethora of conditions brought on by microbes, parasites, viruses, and anything else that might have contaminated the food sources.

Even though the majority of digestive system disorders brought on by food borne illnesses may be avoided by proper hygiene – always wash your hand after handling meat or fish and before touching anything else – and food storage – avoid cross contamination of foods at all costs by never storing raw meat above foods that are eaten raw, such as salads – there are also food choices that may be avoided.

Obviously the notion of going into the woods and cutting yourself a nice mushroom dinner might sound appealingly organic, but unless you know what you are doing with respect to separating mushrooms in edible and inedible sections, this is best left to professionals. In the same vein, eating food that is known to be potentially poisonous, such as blowfish, just for the sake of being able to brag about it should also be avoided.

When food borne illness in not avoided, then the sufferer will most likely present with severe abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and flatulence, gastroenteritis, an overproduction of stomach acid and associated heartburn, and a host of other symptoms and signs that point to a general gastrointestinal upset. Death is possible when the food borne illness is traced back to beef stemming from cows infected with mad cow disease or reef fish found to have been instrumental in causing poisoning with tetrodotoxin.

Truth be told, digestive system disorders brought on by food borne illnesses are somewhat insidious in that in some cases symptoms will appear within a few short hours of ingestion, while in other cases the incubation period make be several days or weeks removed from the time of ingestion. Fecal cultures and blood work will assist in diagnosing accurately the illness and also the extent of exposure as well as treatment choices.

When it comes to understanding and dealing with digestive system disorders, education is a vital component that far too often is overlooked! It is truly surprising how many adults are properly schooled in a plethora of tasks and job related duties, yet when it comes to something as crucial and highly subjective as one's digestive system's overall health, there is little – if any – training that has either been received or sought out.

While it would be simple to assume that physicians will practice proper patient education with respect to the digestive system, the truth of the matter dictates that much of the education is being sought in a time of need, usually in the grocery store aisle dedicated to the relief of symptoms. Consumers have developed the attitude of treating the symptoms without truly getting to the root of the problems that are experienced, and when you consider how intricate and far reaching the digestive system really is – when compared to other structures of the body – this can be a sometimes fatal mistake!

The importance of education in the battle against digestive system disorders cannot be overstated and while the occasional trip to the over the counter section may be necessary for the worst symptoms, there needs to be a balanced approach that seeks to understand the body rather than shut off its responses. It is the vital art and science of self assessment that requires some education and while conventional health practitioners may not always see the value in getting into detail with their patients, alternative health practitioners more often than not will recognize the wisdom of the approach.

In the same vein, it is the latter group that will seek to inform and educate its patients about herbal remedies, the dangers of some commercial treatment options, and also about the symptoms that – instead of being ignored and treated – need to be brought to the attention of a medical professional right away to avoid far reaching systemic damage to the body.

It is interesting to note that the importance of this education should be stressed as early as elementary school when children will first become aware of nutritional choices and learn to separate healthy choices from unhealthy ones. Unless these lessons are enforced in the home, of course, there is precious little that can be gleaned from this education, yet with the proper follow up and implementation, children will soon learn to look out for themselves and understand how their body's digestive system feels when it is humming along, and how it may sputter and malfunction when digestive system disorders may be present.

These are the children who grow up to be adults who are acutely aware of their bodies, their nutritional choices and also their lifestyle options and the relationship that exists between choices made or avoided and overall digestive wellbeing. In addition to the foregoing, these are also the adults who will choose to forego the quick fix of the grocery store aisle and instead seek out the wisdom of natural health treatments.

It throws parents for a loop and many a worrying mom or dad has found that having a little one complain of tummy troubles can indeed be a troubling experience for all. While some may be quick to simply dismiss the problems as something that comes and goes and is part and parcel of the childhood experience, others take these tummy troubles seriously and realize that constipation is a common digestive system disorder in children. An interesting dichotomy of this problem's presentation may be found in that children are frequently highly supervised with respect to their dietary intake, yet at the same time they appear to be more susceptible than other segments of the population when it comes to digestive system disorder symptoms and doctor visits.

Although not a life threatening digestive system disorder, it is painful to the child and at times might even mimic the symptoms of more serious illnesses and conditions, thus necessitating a visit to the emergency room. At issue are usually the changes in dietary intake that are wreaking havoc with the child's innards. Especially young children find the increased reliance on solid food over breast milk or formula to be somewhat gastrointestinally upsetting, while older children attending school may find that the exposure to different dishes, food combination and even cooking methods at the school cafeteria is an experience that leads to constipation.

Yet sometimes it is not the food that is at issue and although constipation is a common digestive system disorder in children it is sometimes brought on by the child who may not feel comfortable to use a restroom other than the one at home and who will try to hold in a bowel movement until it is time to return to the home. If this behavior goes unchecked, the child will manage to unwittingly train her or his intestines to automatically hold on to feces and thus compact them in the intestines.

To ascertain whether or not your child is suffering from this digestive system disorder, ask yourself if your child has had a bowel movement in the last two days. If not, the odds are good that she or he is holding in the feces rather than allowing the body to expel them. Additionally, when you are gently palpating the child's abdomen, does it feel like there may be a hard mass in the lower intestinal area? Is your child scared of using the bathroom and claims that going there is painful?

While this may also be a complaint with other problems, it is a very commonly heard protest when a child is asked to sit on the potty and give their body a chance to let go of some of the waste. Last but not least, constipation is an almost certain diagnosis when the bowel movement contains hard chunks of feces that might be somewhat reminiscent of pebbles. Do not minimize the child's discomfort or even fear of pain and instead consult with your pediatrician for some possible treatments that will take away the fear of using the restroom or counteract the gastrointestinal difficulties that are being experienced because of a changing diet.

Belonging to the upper gastrointestinal tract, the esophagus – in simplest terms – is the connector that leads from the oral cavity to the stomach. It is responsible for moving the food which is ingested with the help of muscular contractions. Some patients are surprised to hear that there are several digestive system disorders that appear to target specifically the esophagus, yet when you glean a thorough understanding of their causality, the presence of these ailments makes sense.

At the top of the list of esophageal digestive system disorders is acid reflux. Prevalent in infants, this disorder is characterized by small amounts of stomach acid leaking from the stomach into the esophagus and from there even reaching as far as the back of the throat. Mild to moderate cases may be known as heartburn and may be ignored while more severe cases have been known to require medication.

While the occasional bout of heartburn is normal and usually is experienced in response to a certain kind of food ingested, prolonged or repeat exposure of the esophagus to the stomach's acid will result in the a deterioration of the esophageal lining. This is dangerous and must be avoided! Visit your physician immediately to learn methods of avoiding repeat heartburn and to treat it when it does occur.

Esophageal cancer is one of the deadliest and it claims the lives of about 75% of those undergoing treatment. The initial symptoms usually are concurrent with advanced cancerous growths and are associated with difficult or painful swallowing, a change in vocal chord timbre, and also nausea and involuntary regurgitation. As the cancer progresses, it will invade the liver and also the lungs. By and large men are more likely than women to suffer from this esophageal digestive system disorder and the use of tobacco, alcohol and the ingestion of nitrate containing food products have been identified as risk factors.

Another one of the digestive system disorders associated with the esophagus is the hiatal hernia which describes a protuberance of the stomach. Acid reflux is one of the most common symptoms and frequent heartburn may also be associated with it. It is interesting to note that coughing and straining brought on by constipation has been associated with this ailment. In those cases where no acute discomfort is felt, treatment is usually not indicated while for those who experience strong symptoms of the condition the only answer is surgery. The latter is indicated primarily to protect the lining of the esophagus which is overly exposed to the stomach's acid.

Mallory-Weiss syndrome is directly related to food choices made by a patient and generally speaking those imbibing alcohol liberally and to excess and those following fad diets leading to eating disorders are more likely to suffer from this condition. Vomiting of blood is one of the surefire signs that this syndrome may be the disorder the patient is suffering with, and it is directly related to the tearing of the mucosa. Treatment is available and nutritional counseling as well as alcohol cessation are the only methods of avoiding future occurrences of this illness.

A lot of people in the U.S. are not diagnosed properly when they exhibit symptoms of celiac disease. Individuals, who have this disease, cannot digest gluten. Gluten is a protein that is found in foods that have wheat, rye, or barley in them. These grains are commonly found in many breads, pasta, cookies and even beer. The only grain that does not contain gluten is oats. Oats found in the U.S. marketplace however can be cross contaminated due to crop rotation and milling procedures and therefore may also be difficult or impossible for someone with celiac disease to digest.

A research report, published in 2004, reveals that as many as one in every 133 Americans, that's approximately 2 million people have celiac disease. This disease, left undiagnosed can be dangerous to the person's health, can lead to slow growth patterns in children and can leave individual undernourished and their bodies lacking in the essential nutrients that they need to have proper growth and energy.

An individual eating food that contains gluten who has celiac disease triggers an autoimmune response to the substance, which will have the body attacking, and destroying normal tissue, especially the tissue in the small intestine called, "villi". These villi are tiny, hair-like fingers that have the purpose of absorbing nutrients that come from the food we eat. When the individual with celiac disease eats gluten, the malfunction and tissue destruction causes chronic diarrhea, gas, bloating, reflux and also constipation. It does not take much gluten in the diet to cause this reaction; only a small amount can spell trouble.

Nausea, bloating, gas, and vomiting, diarrhea and constipation are symptoms for many diseases and disorders so a doctor must determine the diagnosis.

Celiac disease is serious because it can cause anemia, malnutrition, infertility, skin rashes, and other health problems.

Individual with celiac disease not only have the gastrointestinal symptoms but they can also experience mood changes and fatigue.

Individuals with the disease can have one or more of the symptoms associated with the disease, but not all individuals exhibit digestive problems. Some individuals who have the disease do not notice any symptoms at all. Celiac disease does run in families, so when one family member is diagnosed with the disease, the other immediate family members should also be tested.

A gluten-free diet can make a huge difference in the lives of those with celiac disease.

Performing one of two tests makes diagnosis. The first is a serious of blood tests. These tests can give false negatives. If a positive is obtained from these tests, a biopsy of the small intestine is required to make the diagnosis.

Healing is possible by maintaining a strict gluten-free diet for the rest of the individual's life.

There are now restaurants that are offering foods that are gluten-free for their patrons to choose from which helps when individuals with celiac disease enjoy eating out.

In simplest terms, listeriosis is an infection with the bacteria known as listeria monocytogenes. It is dangerous to those most commonly infected: infants and elderly patients. This bacterium has become known as contributing to miscarriage, stillbirth, meningitis, pneumonia, and bodily sepsis. Preventing digestive system disorders brought on by listeriosis – generally speaking they include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, and in some cases long lasting nausea without vomiting – is not as hard as the insidious nature of the bacterium might suggest.

First and foremost of course is the avoidance of ingesting affected food sources. Dairy products are the highest risk source, and the ingestion of un-pasteurized milk is one of the most dangerous food choices a consumer might make. Raw veggies and fruits are also culprits and copious washing with dish detergent is always recommended. Not too long the ingestion of organic vegetable and fruit drinks that contained raw ingredients but were not pasteurized was blamed for severe listeria infection in a number of individuals. Remember that pasteurization is a key component of food safety and no matter how organic, healthy, and natural a product claims to be, if it is not pasteurized, you are at risk.

Sushi lovers and those who die for a plate of carpaccio will do well to remember that raw food is a breeding ground for this bacterium and there is nothing that will remove listeria from a bite of sushi! No matter how good it looks, for all you know it could be crawling with listeria. Preventing digestive system disorders brought on by listeriosis begins by making sensible – even if unpopular – food choices. In addition to the foregoing, review your food storage. It has been found that at freezing the bacteria are still seen as being not only viable but happily reproducing and thus you will be wise to further lower the temperature of your freezer.

If you suspect that you might have been exposed to listeria bacteria – or have received notification by a food distributor that there is a chance of infection – immediate medical attention must be obtained. Blood panels will reveal the presence of the bacteria and contrary to popular belief, stool samples are not sufficient for diagnosis. Thus even infants need to undergo a blood panel. Antibiotics will be the only treatment option and at a mortality rate of about 25% of those seeking medical attention, this is one food borne illness that should be avoided at all costs.

Since prevention is best and you already know that some food choices need to be avoided, remember that hygiene not only involves the hands but also the cooking utensils, cutting boards, knives, counter tops, dish towels, and kitchen sponges. The latter is a veritable breeding ground of bacteria from all around the spectrum and no matter how much antibacterial soap you use, the frequent changing of this cleaning agent is an absolute must. In addition to the foregoing, never compromise on leftover foods or even precooked foods and assume that they are safe to eat right out of the fridge. Reheat them in the microwave or use another cooking method until they are completely cooked and hot all the way through.
