Great Britain may not be a hotbed for chiropractics, but once the science invaded the isle, it was next to impossible to pretend it was not popular. As a matter of fact, many Brits view the chiropractor with something akin to awe, in part because she or he is so in tune with the body's functioning and in another part because it is possible for a chiropractor to affect so much of a person's life and quality of life simply by expertly placing hands on certain areas of the vertebrae and adjusting them. It is therefore not surprising that a number of schools have sprung up that are supporting those who are embarking on a career in chiropractics, and if you are thinking of studying in Great Britain to become a chiropractor, you will want to know about them as well!

Take for example McTimoney College of Chiropractic science and art in Oxfordshire. In 1972 this college was founded by the late John McTimoney whose professional life before the Great Depression began as a silversmith. Along the way he changed course and became an artist, yet it was his lifelong love for others in pain and attempts to find ways that would ease pain that would lead to the spectacular change in life which would have far reaching consequences. Mr. McTimoney himself suffered a fall from a ladder which gradually robbed him of the use of his arms and began to impair the use of his legs as well. Physicians suggested a risky surgery, yet Mrs. McTimoney had revived an early childhood acquaintance with a chiropractor who had studied with Daniel Palmer, the inventor of chiropractics, himself. This chiropractor treated Mr. McTimoney successfully and the latter was so impressed with the ability to relieve pain that he was hoping to find a way to learn this art. It would take a few more years until Mr. McTimoney once again crossed paths with a chiropractor, a student of Bartlett Palmer, who was actively searching out students for her craft, and this time he went ahead and trained.

Given time, Mr. McTimoney was able to cure his own wife from neuritis and in 1951 went into private practice as a chiropractor. While in practice, he fine-tuned his approach to the practice and soon became known as a holistic healer. Three years later he began to use his ability also to ease pain in animals, and to this day he is credited with being the first chiropractor ever to attempt such a feat. Due to the overwhelming demand for his services, in 1972 he founded the Oxfordshire School of Chiropractic where he taught others to not only relive the suffering of humans but also of animals. In the year 1980 John McTimoney died, but his school and mission endures to this day, being perpetuated by the man's former students who now pass on his knowledge, understanding and innovation to anyone who feels the calling to spend a life dedicated to easing suffering in man and beast.

If getting out of bed is a painful routine for you, then you know that your body is protesting about something that has happened. Perhaps your legs ache, your back hurts, your neck feels stiff on one side, and within minutes of waking you feel a dull headache coming on. Do you know that these problems and the further reaching health issues that may be caused by them can be avoided? Here are some tips and tricks your chiropractor would like you to know:

* First and foremost, visit your local chiropractor to have your spinal alignment checked and adjusted as appropriate. Starting out with a clean slate will help many of the little aches and pains – and even some of the big ones – to go away permanently.

* Do not feel that you have to jump out of bed in the morning and start running from the first moment your open your eyes. Instead, set the alarm for 15 minutes earlier and do some deep breathing exercises, and some light stretching when you get out of bed. Turn to your left and right with the upper body, then repeat the same exercise with your neck.

* Remember what mom always told you: stand up straight! While slouching over your book will not give you a hump (sorry, mom) it will contribute to the poor aligning of your spine and may even aggravate certain conditions!

* Everyone knows that lifting needs to be done carefully from the knees with a straight back – but tell this to your kids! As a matter of fact, do tell it to your kids! Teaching them to lift properly by example – such as when you are lifting them – will go a long ways to preserving their and your healthy back and spine.

* Ladies, there are some aspects of appearing ladylike and chic that have chiropractors cringing every time they see it: high heels which affect the spine due to the lack of a proper distribution of weight, legs crossed in the same position, and of course shoulder purses that carry everything including the kitchen sink. All of these little things that millions of women do each day contribute to an unhealthy way of life and a potentially hurt spine.

* Office workers know the guilty pleasure of working on the computer while holding the phone cradled in the crook of the neck, or those whose home offices are set up in such a manner that the computer keyboard is positioned improperly for the sake of the aesthetic appearance of the home décor.

If you are honest, you know that you are probably engaging in one or more of these behaviors that chiropractors will warn you against on a daily basis. While it is easy to rationalize these missteps that are negatively affecting your spine, the fact remains that the pain in the morning and the shooting pain that suddenly may affect you in the afternoon is very real. Thus, you will be wise to follow your chiropractor's advice, and furthermore schedule regular visits to your chiropractor to ensure that your spine is in proper alignment and that you will not suffer from tension headaches, neck pains, and assorted other ailments which can all be avoided.

No other medical professional is quite as associated with overall physical wellness as the chiropractor. Granted, in unlearned circles the work is still referred to as "bone cracking" yet this kind of thinking is quickly dying out, especially now that chiropractic care is entering the mainstream. It is not surprising that more and more patients flock to chiropractors, since many insurance companies now recognize them as primary care physicians and will cover their visits. In the past it was an uphill battle to have a chiropractors' visit covered by any health insurance company, yet in light of the undisputable advances of chiropractic care, the methodology involved of curing the whole patient, and the fact that the education of practitioners is above dispute made it easy for these breakthroughs to occur.

Of course, with these privileges also come responsibilities, and quite a few practitioners who only yesterday saw only the occasional patient in search of alternative healing suddenly find themselves facing full waiting rooms. For many this requires a shift in thinking since suddenly they are no longer sought out by those who favor alternative medicine but instead they are now becoming members of a team that is often comprised of internists, orthopedic practitioners, and a host of others who are all looking after one patient. Promoting wellness through chiropractic care now involves not only treating the patient but also keeping the other members of the team informed as to progress made, assessments found, and changes in general health or complaints the patient may have. Conversely, if a chiropractor is chosen as a primary care physician by a patient, this will involve long hours pouring over charts and reviewing information sent over to the office by other physicians.

As part of a team, the patient will also expect you to refer them to another doctor for blood work and other testing as needed, and it is no longer considered to be out of form for a chiropractor to do so. The ultimate goal is of course the overall health of the patient, and this is to be achieved in the most natural way possible with as little medication as is indicated. In some cases this might require a chiropractor to educate a patient who is searching for overall health in alternative medicine but may be dubious about the idea of also dealing with the established forms of medicine. As such, a chiropractor will need to weigh limitations of treatment, time spent on alternative methodology, and also the ability of the patient to follow a strict regimen of nutrition and exercise which you may have prescribed as part of the healing process. Thus, a chiropractor promotes wellness not just through treatment of the individual patient, but also through education of the patient and the idea of involving her or him in the process that will lead to wellness. For some the latter might be a new experience, especially if thus far they have only been on the receiving end of shots and pills, rather than actual holistic care.

Whenever you speak of chiropractors, you will often hear the adherents of old school medical treatments deride their work as being unlicensed and a quack's profession. Yet speak to someone who really understands the science behind the art of chiropractics and also the hard work and long hours that go into learning this technique, and you will be amazed to find out just how intricate the study process really is, and what amount of knowledge a professional chiropractor truly possesses. Of course, some ascribe way too much ability to these professionals as well, and many a chiropractor will be quick to point out to you that working in concert with other medical professionals will bring about great results, while relying on only one aspect of medicine will severely limit the outcome.

A chiropractor – just like any other health professional – will listen intently to the complaints of the patient and will seek to build a picture of the individual's health, past as well as present. Yet unlike a medical professional who will order a series of blood tests to determine if there are any abnormalities in the white cell count that could hint toward infection or perhaps any other problems such as hormonal imbalances, the chiropractor will seek to ascertain if there dysfunctions of the soft tissues, the skeleton, or perhaps any nerves running along the spinal area. Once a diagnosis is arrived at, the chiropractor will not put you on a drug regimen or give you a number of injections. In addition to the foregoing, your chiropractor will most likely not encourage you to change your environment to such an extent as to not aggravate your condition any further. On the contrary, she or he will work hard to help your body to once again regain its former abilities – obviously within the limitations of you current age and overall state of health.

Treatment will generally involve gentle and sometimes stronger manipulations of the spine. What is colloquially referred to as "bone cracking" is really a much more refined technique of realigning vertebrae that are no longer properly stacked. The goal of this kind of treatment is taking the musculoskeletal system back to the shape in which it is supposed to be, and then allowing nerves and tissues to follow along and once again retake their natural position. For those who have lived with a disjointed spine for a while, this may take a few visits, especially if the tissues and tendons have worked hard to compensate for the misaligned vertebrae for a long period of time.

It is true that sometimes these adjustments are painful. This is not always the case, of course, but when a body has to relearn a proper gait, a way to throw a ball or simply the act of setting one foot in front of the other, the learning curve may be prolonged and at times rather uncomfortable. Yet these moments pale when compared to the many instances where pain is reduced simply because the body is retrained to function normally.

Dogs, just like their owners, can suffer from subluxation. It is therefore not surprising that quite a few specialists have begun to advertise their services as bona fide animal chiropractors. While this is a positive development – after all, it is great that chiropractic care for animals is now available – there is also room for error, and some who hold themselves out to be animal chiropractors really are not. Sure, they may have a rudimentary understanding of veterinary science, but they do not know the fine points of an animal's anatomy. On the flipside, they may be well versed in human chiropractics, but know little of animal chiropractics. Here are some signs that you have found a practitioner you should avoid:

* The professional you are visiting is not specifically trained in animal chiropractics. This may be either a veterinarian who is dabbling in chiropractics or a human chiropractor who wants to expand her or his clientele. There are bona fide courses of study for those who would engage in this profession, and successful completion is rewarded with a certificate.

* The professional you are visiting does not have any veterinary background. This is oftentimes found in chiropractors who are seeking to train themselves to become animal care providers, but they are lacking the in depth knowledge in the methodology as well as the facts needed to adequate diagnose problems.

* If you find someone who is both trained and also certificated, take a look at their methods. If the professional proceeds to pull the dog's legs or even the tail, it is a good indicator that she or he is lacking hands on training or expertise, and it is probably best to move on. Avoid those who are good with horses but have never treated a dog before. The same is true the other way round as well. Many animal chiropractors are general practitioners, but some specialize and it is hard to infer knowledge from one species to another.

* If the veterinary chiropractor is content to take your word for the ailment and fails to examine the dog prior to engaging in vertebrae adjustments, it is best to move on. While you know your dog best, a veterinary chiropractor needs to examine the animal to ensure that there are no underlying causes for the change in gait – such as a cracked or broken bone – which could be aggravated by any attempts of manipulation or adjustment.

Speak to your trusted veterinarian to recommend a practitioner. Perhaps friends or family members know of a veterinary chiropractor who is great with certain types of animals, and you can go ahead and make an appointment. Similarly, if you do not know anyone who can make a recommendation, go ahead and contact local dog breeders for suggestions and advise. Last but not least, contact the licensing agencies which certificate animal chiropractors to give you names and phone numbers for practitioners in your area. You will find that finding the right chiropractor for Rover is just as important as finding the right practitioner for you!

While becoming a chiropractor in Canada is not a simple matter, the course of study and hands on training embarked upon by those willing to eagerly learn the ropes shows that this is a labor of love that many see as a life calling rather than simply a profession chosen to supply needed financial support for their lives. It is noteworthy that in Canada a chiropractor is generally thought of as a specialist who has deepened her or his medical studies in neuro-musculoskeletal medicine. Probably the premier institution for aspiring chiropractors is the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in Quebec.

It is interesting to note that in addition to chiropractics, the schools insist on training their students to be well rounded and thus an education in dentistry, optometry and general medicine is part and parcel of this training course. Thus, students will be seen with book on anatomy and neuroscience while others will be studying for their exams in biochemistry and embryology. Additionally, before even being considered for enrollment, three years of university study must have been successfully completed before a student will qualify to be considered for admission to the program. Once the student is enrolled, she or he will have to engage in about four years of study – longer if the student wishes to go part time in some semesters – and also a one year internship.

During the training period, Canadian students will not only learn the theory behind the successes of chiropractic care, but they will also have an opportunity to learn first hand how to arrive at a diagnosis, render treatment, and document the finding as well as the treatments. This is done under the watchful eye of a highly qualified teacher, of course, yet the goal is to give the student a lot of freedom so as to explore chiropractics in the broadest sense possible. It is the goal of the institutions of higher learning to not simply hone a student's skills with respect to spinal manipulations but to instead turn out medical professionals who will understand the relationships that exist between mind and body, external influences and the body, as well as the impact that the body can have on itself.

As you can see, there is a lot more to becoming a chiropractor in Canada than simply taking a quick course and then advertising in the local newspaper. There is much study and education involved, and it is only the dedicated student who will be able to not only undertake this course of study but to also see it through to the end. What once began as a simple exploration of methods for alternative healing has now transcended into a certified course of study that not only yields a lot of results on the medical front, but also attracts high quality students from around the globe. Canada prides itself on its educational programs for aspiring chiropractors, and it is not surprising that so many of them will flock to the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières or any one of the other institutes that currently offer a program for a doctor of chiropractic.

Chiropractors believe that "subluxations" can cause the medical conditions that we experience. They base this on the idea that when our bodies are injured and the structure to our body (spine) it leads to a misalignment that can cause damage how nerve signals are relayed back and forth from the brain. The belief is that when those who practice chiropractic realign the body then the nerve relays can be corrected thus correcting any resultant medical conditions. Chiropractic theory is that good health is related to proper spinal column position and condition. In 1895 Daniel David Palmer founded Chiropractic practices. He believed that diseases were a result of spinal bones that had become misaligned. His theory of "subluxations" these misalignments of the spinal bones is what causes disease when the "nerve energy flow" is interrupted. This flow from brain to all the body cells is interrupted by the spinal misalignment causing disease.

Subluxation Explained

The term "subluxation" is used differently in the medical community from how it is used in the chiropractic community. In the medical community the term means that there is a partial dislocation of a joint structure. In the chiropractic community, "subluxation" refers to more of a metaphysical status of body structure.

The Connection Between Health and Alignment

Health conditions related to the misalignment of the spinal cord include: breathing disorders such as asthma, cramps, headaches, and stomach ailments. There seems to be a pattern to how health ailments occur – the sequence is that first there is a misalignment, then pain is experienced in muscles or body structure, then the nerves, and lastly the person's energy and health.

The basic chiropractic therapy is to manually adjust what is distorted or misaligned with the body (spine or other skeletal bones). This realignment restores the normal flexibility to spine and joints. This allows for normal positioning of the spine and structure of the body, which in turn relieves stress on the nervous system. When the nervous system is restored, energy can again flow correctly throughout the body restoring and healing damaged or unhealthy body parts. Tense muscles can contribute to misalignment so most chiropractic therapy involves ultrasound and massage to help relax muscles.

There are certain conditions that chiropractic therapy may help. These conditions are: joint locking, and myofascial pain syndrome (fibromyalgia).

Chiropractors use many instruments including x-rays to determine what misalignments have occurred to the body structures so that proper realignment can take place. Whenever a patient has known symptomatic vertebral disc herniation chiropractic manipulation is contraindicated. Those who have arthritis of the spine must also not be subjected to chiropractic manipulation.

Tips to Verify a Good Chiropractor Therapy is being practiced
Like most professions there can be some who practice unsavory theory. There are some ways to determine the good from the bad.

1. Recommendation from your physician

2. The chiropractor is a member of the National Association for Chiropractic Medicine or the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapists

Who to Avoid

1. Those who use scare tactics

2. Any who offer to sell supplements there in their office

3. Have lengthy contracts for clients to sign that promote regular "preventive" adjustments

4. Suggest that they are substitutes for regular visits to your physician or that they can treat medical problems, which are not musculoskeletal in nature

The education of today's chiropractic doctors is highly regulated and requires four years of intensive study. Part and parcel of the chiropractic curriculum are basic sciences. Some students wonder whether or not the amount of time spent in these endeavors could not be spent better by learning the core applications that will later on help them in their practice with patients. While at face value this might be a reasonable request, it soon becomes obvious that basic sciences is actually a most crucial aspect in the training of the next generation of chiropractors.

Basic sciences within the chiropractic curriculum usually refer to the study of biochemistry, pathology, physiology, anatomy, and even microbiology. These subject areas appear to only be tangentially related to chiropractics as a field, but under closer scrutiny they soon make it quite apparent that in fact a well rounded chiropractic cannot be accomplished without them. After all, how better to teach a student the many different ways in which abnormalities in a patient's body might present. Sure, every student will be able to recognize an abnormally curved spine, yet the fine points of abnormality, especially beginning abnormalities in their early stages, usually require significant training that can only be had by mastering the basic sciences.

Add to this the fact that some abnormalities can be detected as early as they appear on the cellular level, and the notion that biochemistry as well as microbiology are requires suddenly does not appear as such a waste of time anymore. Of course, anatomy is a mainstay in the chiropractic field, since it will help the student to understand the proximity of organs to the nerves of the spine, and will also help the aspiring chiropractor to have a healthy respect for the many problems that could arise from improper care, thus stressing the need for interdisciplinary knowledge when treating the patient as a whole rather than just a problem area.

For the chiropractic doctor who will be practicing in the United States, the basic sciences are an integral part in the process of becoming a primary care physician and will help the health care professional to read, understand, and use the information provided by other medical professionals. In addition to the foregoing, as part of a medical team treating a patient, she or he is now able to adequately communicate with the other medical professionals as well, thus increasing the patient's chances of receiving quality medical care and attaining a healing that will last in the long term rather than receiving a short term fix.

To be sure, basic sciences are very much the basis on which the chiropractic curriculum builds itself, and develops the aspiring chiropractors' understanding and appreciation of the physical aspects she or he will be dealing with in the clinical setting. Any chiropractic student who thinks they can make do without this information will be sadly mistaken and find that a lack of knowledge in basic sciences will usually lead to a lot of catching up in the higher courses.

If you have never been to a chiropractor before, you might be wondering exactly what to expect. It is easy to have many misconceptions about this kind of alternative medicine. As a matter of fact, if you have some trepidation about a visit to a chiropractor in the first place, it is easy to get worried rather than look forward to some much needed help. Here are the facts about understanding your very first visit to a chiropractor:

* You chiropractor will ask you about your current health problems. Much against the grain of popular opinion, she or he does not only want to hear about your back pain or shoulder aches, but also about frequent colds, susceptibility to infection, hearing problems, changes in weight, and even any cramping you might be experiencing. It is important that you state exactly what you are feeling, even if you think it might sound silly, since you do not know the proper medical terminology to couch your expressions in. The fact of the matter remains that much of chiropractic relies on the sensitivity of touch, and the more detailed your description of the problem and its manifestation, the more able the chiropractor will be to clearly understand what it is that troubles you and most certainly it will ease her or his way of finding the problem and also its source.

* The next set of questions asked will deal with your medical history, including your family's medical history. Included in this set of questions is a subset that deals with medical care you are currently receiving as well as care you have received in the past, no matter what the source of that care is. Be sure to talk about hospitalizations, consultations with dieticians, physicians, or anyone else with whom you have undergone treatment for your health. Your chiropractor will take detailed notes to ensure that nothing is missed.

* Next, your chiropractor will want to know about your job. She or he will not only inquire about the stress level of your job, but also ask about the exact kind of work that you do, whether you sit or stand while performing your job, which kinds of machines – if any – you operate, what you do for lunch, whether you walk at any time during your work day or are mostly sedentary, and quite possibly a host of other questions.

As you can see, the questions your chiropractor will ask deal with you as a whole person, not simply singling out your spine, a shoulder, or maybe a leg. While this may be part and parcel of common medicine, the very fact that chiropractic care is considered alternative medicine makes it different in this respect. Your chiropractor understands that there is more to your health issues than simply a sprained ankle, a slipped disc, or a vertebra that is out of alignment. The goal is to find out what caused the problem and how it can be corrected so that it will not trouble you again.

The idea of chiropractic medicine is neither new nor revolutionary. As a matter of fact, it is the tried and true methods that were partially discovered and partially invented by one Daniel Palmer, a Canadian native, who was a bit of an oddball in his time. Born in the year 1845, it took Mr. Palmer a little while to find his niche in life. Working as a teacher for children and also as an accountant and grocer, he eventually followed in his professional life where his voracious reading appetite led him: a career in alternative healing. Granted, Mr. Palmer was not a medical doctor and did not at any time pretend to have the education that the physicians of the time enjoyed, yet nonetheless when reading medical texts he could not help but wonder if there was not something that was being overlooked. Being a devotee of spiritualism and its ideas of alternative healing, it did not take long for Mr. Palmer to engage in the art of magnetic healing, which in the 1880s was quite the rage in America.

What led to his breakthrough into chiropractics was the chance meeting with a man who suffered from deafness while at the same time evidencing a rather sizeable lump in his back. Mr. Palmer could not help but wonder if there might be a connection between the lump in the man's back and the deafness from which he suffered. Putting his theory to the test, he sought to manipulate the nerves of the back and free the nerves from the pressure put on them by the lump through aggressive palpitations. What would be considered a breakthrough for alternative medicine occurred when Mr. Palmer stunned the American medical society with a report of a successful treatment!

From then on, Mr. Palmer's course was charted and he continued to work on his ideas of chiropractics, as a matter of fact founding a school in Iowa that was dedicated to the training of future chiropractors who would be schooled in his research, understand his methods, and be able to hopefully duplicate his successful treatments. Of course, this did not sit well with the established medical professionals of the day who looked with suspicion on this latest development, and it did not take long for the threatened physicians to accuse Mr. Palmer – and have him convicted – of practicing medicine without a license. Not one to be easily intimidated, he spent a few days in jail, paid his fine, and left his school behind – only to travel to the West Coast states to open three new schools in Oregon, Oklahoma, and also California. While Mr. Palmer was not able to witness the growing popularity of his newfound movement due to his death in 1913, it goes without saying that chiropractic care has become a mainstream commodity. Interestingly, the feud between established medicine and chiropractics continues to linger and every so often if even flares up – just like it did in the days when Mr. Palmer first introduced his theory to the world.
