There are some professionals who believe that certain things that cause people to suffer a lack of control as it pertains to anger are hereditary. Especially if the causes are medical or psychological, during which the traits seem to be replicated in children of those with anger management issues.

Those with mental issues, such as bi-polar disorder, are often seen as having an inherited problem as these types of disorders are often seen as a valid medical problem and not as a mental disease. Treatment for the child is usually similar to that of the adult from which they may have inherited the problem. While high blood pressure and anxiety are often thought to affect more than one generation, as causes of anger disorders, they are believed to also be hereditary.

Although it has also been shown that a person's environment affects their ability to cope with situations that may cause extreme anger, inherited health issues can lend themselves to being a contributing factor as well. A person who grew up with parents arguing over everything and yelling to get their point across may fall into the trap of being overly argumentative and easily angered, but this would be considered more of an environmental issue rather than being inherited.

Those with high blood pressure, often cited as a hereditary disorder may develop the thinking that holding in their anger only makes their blood pressure worse and believe in letting it out when something bothers them. Many physicians and psychoanalysts now believe just the opposite id true, as venting extreme anger can increase the blood pressure as the chance of having a stroke. While holding it in is not considered healthy either, finding a middle ground where a situation or an event should be discussed to possibly prevent a recurrence, it should be done in a calm and effective manner so all parties to the discussion come away feeling as though something positive was accomplished.

While there is no scientific basis determining that anger problems are hereditary, certain mental and physical disorders that can lead to outbursts of explosive anger may be inherited from your parents. The fact that anger is an emotion is a telling indication that, since emotions are not hereditary, anger issues cannot be hereditary. How we respond to the anger emotion is most likely based on environment and not hereditary and statements, such as claiming you cry at movies because your mother, or father, did do not make crying at movies a hereditary trait. Rather it is probably an indication that you were taught that it is OK to openly express your emotions and anger will be among those.

Men especially are most likely to express anger as it has long been a socially acceptable emotion for males to exhibit. Men may go from feeling hurt or vulnerable directly to anger as it is something they were taught it is OK to do. While that is not a hereditary issue, it seems ingrained in many males, regardless of their environmental influences.
